From global challenge to unique opportunity

In May 2020, Class Of Your Own worked with SCAPE to launch Learning in Lockdown, a virtual work experience programme for students aged 14-15.

The week was based around a collaborative construction, design, engineering and project management challenge, featuring all of the STEM subjects. The Class Of Your Own team provided the syllabus, learning resources and guidance for teachers, schools and students.

More than 300 schools and thousands of UK students took part. The initiative was supported by over 150 people from 32 of the biggest names in construction, giving 224 hours of their time.

The result were fantastic and great feedback came in from students, teachers and industry alike. The design submissions from students were amazing, and undoubtedly many were inspired to consider a career in construction.

How it worked

  • The 30-hour work experience ran over five days, with students participating online.
  • Young people worked together in small groups – and with industry mentors – to deliver a fully detailed engineering design proposal. And this was not just theory. They worked on a real building!
  • Learn Live managed the broadcast and interactive online experience to engage thousands of participants
  • The scheme was fully audited and all participating young people who submitted an entry at the end of the week were provided with a Silver Industrial Cadets award – part of the national Industrial Cadets accreditation network
  • The Social Value Portal monitored and reported upon the social value generated throughout the whole initiative

“It has been a pleasure working with Class of Your Own. The whole team obviously share a collective passion for what they do, and are truly expert in delivering educational outcomes. We have been delighted by the response to our national work experience programme from teachers, students and industry. Working together has been a success because the team approach everything they do with such positivity.”
